The marking scheme for CISC 220 section 2, as listed in the syllabus, is:
- Bi-weekly Online Quizzes on OnQ : 10%
- Programming Assignments : 30%
- Written Quizzes : 20%
- Final Exam : 40%
- Plus possible bonus points : 2%
A) Bi-weekly Online Quizzes on OnQ [10%]
- There will be Six Online Quizzes each for 2%
- Only the top 5 scores will be counted.
- Online Quizzes will only cover the topics discussed in the previous two weeks. Topics will be stated explicitly for each quiz on the quiz’s OnQ page.
- Each online quiz consists of 10 questions.
- Online quiz duration is 20 minutes.
- You will only have 1 attempt to solve the quiz.
- The online quizzes will be available every other Friday from Fri 00:00 till Sat 23:59. That’s a 48 hours window to take it.
- Online quizzes are open book, open slides, open notes and open internet. But to be taken individually!!!.
- There won’t be any retakes for online quizzes, so make sure you take at least 5 out of the 6 online quizzes.
- If for any reason you can’t take online tests [medical reasons], please come talk to me or send me an email and we will figure something out.
B) Programming Assignments [30%]
- There will be Six Programming Assignments each for 5%
- All 6 of them will be counted.
- Assignments will be released and submitted on the course’s OnQ page.
- Assignments can be submitted individually or in groups of maximum 4 student per group.
- With each submission, you MUST include the name(s) AND student number(s) of each member of the group as a comment at the top of all the source code files you are submitting. Unidentified submissions [ones without the names and numbers] will be deducted 1 point.
- You can discuss ideas with other groups but not share/look at/submit other group’s code or even detailed pseudocode. See the Academic Integrity page for more details.
- You CAN submit the assignment late but a penalty of 1 point will be deducted for each day after the assignment due date.
C) Written Quizzes [20%]
- Three quizzes each for 10%
- Only the top 2 scores will be counted
- Written Quizzes will only cover the topics discussed after the previous written quiz. Topics will be stated explicitly for each quiz on the quiz’s OnQ page.
- Written quiz duration is 50 minutes.
- Written quizzes will be in lecture time and in the lecture hall.
- Written quizzes are CLOSED book, CLOSED slides, CLOSED notes and CLOSED internet.
- However, the written quiz paper will include a copy of the relevant CISC 220 commands.
- There won’t be any retakes for written quizzes, so make sure you take at least 2 out of the 3 written quizzes.
- If you have any accessibility requirements, please come talk to me or send me an email at least one week before the quiz and we will figure something out.
- I will not answer any quiz related emails 48 hours before a quiz. So study early to be able to ask me if you are facing problems.
D) Final Exam [40%]
- The final exam for this course will be administered by the Queen’s exams office.
- Sometime in December.
- The exam schedule will be set in October and your exams will be added to your schedule on SOLUS.
- Final exam is closed book. You will not be allowed to bring any books, notes, or other materials.
- However, the final exam paper will include a copy of the relevant CISC 220 commands.
- If you need special accommodations for your final exam, you need to discuss that with the Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) and they will help you to arrange it and the deadline for that is mid-semester. If you don’t bother to make the arrangements by the deadline you’ll have to write in the regular exam hall.
- If you have a sudden last-minute need for accommodations (such as a broken arm) then talk with the Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) and if they write me a letter confirming that you need accommodations they can’t provide I will help you out.
Letter Grades:
All components of this course will receive numerical percentage marks. The final grade you receive for the course will be derived by converting your numerical course average to a letter grade according to Queen’s Official Grade Conversion Scale:
